How Our Fluency Training Method Works:
Reading success requires two essential skills: accuracy and fluency. Many programs focus only on accurate word reading, but that’s not enough. Students must also read smoothly and effortlessly.
Our Two-Step Approach:
Step 1: Accurate Reading
Students first read words correctly in each lesson. Teachers (or parents) monitor closely and provide immediate help when students misread words, including step-by-step sounding-out instruction when needed.
Step 2: Fluent Reading
Students then practice reading the same words smoothly and naturally. This bridges the gap between knowing words and understanding meaning.
Why This Works:
Research shows that accuracy doesn’t automatically lead to fluency. Students need explicit fluency training to become confident readers who focus on comprehension rather than struggling with individual words.
Our Materials Include:
Carefully sequenced lessons with decodable text
Word lists, sentences, and short stories
Supplemental Fluency Reader for extra practice
All materials coordinated to build skills systematically
Why This Works: Three Proven Fluency Techniques You Can Use Today:
The best way to develop reading fluency is to provide guidance and feedback as students read the same text repeatedly.
Technique 1: Teacher Modeling and Echo Reading
The teacher reads first while student follows along silently – Teacher reads one sentence/paragraph twice – Student then reads the same text aloud – immediate feedback and correction provided
Technique 2: Choral Reading
Teacher and student(s) read together – Teacher’s voice guides pace and expression – Builds confidence for hesitant readers – Creates supportive learning environment
Technique 3: Partner Reading
Pair stronger readers with developing readers – Stronger reader models fluent reading first – Partner provides feedback and support – Both readers practice with guided text
Why Our Decodable Text Makes the Difference:
Most fluency programs use any text, but research shows decodable text works best. Our lessons only include phonetic patterns students have already learned.
Example: If students haven’t learned the “ch” sound yet, no words with “ch” appear in their practice text. This practice lets students focus on fluency instead of struggling with unknown patterns.
Result: Students read effortlessly without conscious effort spent on decoding individual words.
